'Man on Boat' features a typical scene found on the waterways of central Vietnam. Taken overlooking the Thu Bon River in Hoi An, a trader returns from the local markets having earned his lunch for the day. The image is dominated by a strong geometrical composition and beautifully illustrates the simplicity of transport along such waterways. A red bowls canny location in the centre of the composition is complimented by the man's large circular hat shading his face from view and the hot midday sun. This provides anonymity to the photography and also reduces detail, drawing the eye toward the red bowl at the man's feet and then towards his sandals. Strong triangular and directional lines are created by the form of the boats stern and ore. The ore half wet leads the eye from the bottom right hand corner of the image to the stern of the boat, terminating with the man's fist that reaches out from beneath the hat. A wonderful tension is also created between the stern and the edge of the photograph. The colours of the photograph also work wonderfully with the geometry. Complimentary colours work well together, green of the water with the red bowl and the man's blue shirt with the lighter shades of the wooden deck of the boat.
Please note that this image is unedited, no cropping or re-framing has occurred nor other manipulations. This photograph is as captured.
