Description
With the 4 Celtic Mandalas of the Elements I saw the different key patterns, knotted loops, and brackets as different types of elemental energies; so I played with color combinations that reflected those elements: fire = reds, water = blues & greens, earth = browns & plant colors, and air = sunny yellow.
The origin of the mandala lies in the unwritten past of Vedic ceremonies handed down through HIndu, and then also Buddhist, spiritual practice. The center dot or seed, is the manda, or essence, which is the starting point around which the devotees energies unfold. The la, or outer circle, indicates the container which holds this essence. The traditional mandala form has 4 gates and every color has a specific meaning as do all the symbols used in its creation. I chose my own colors and symbolism for this mandala.
In western society the mandala form has captured the imagination of artists and led to personally creative interpretations; yet even these mandalas still retain the qualities of quiet contemplation and peace. The beauty of this form is in its universal appeal. Whether you like mandalas to aid in prayer and meditation, or to enhance a living or work space, these visual aids encourage all to take a moment to stop their busy-ness, take a breath, and feel their center-place, their inner essence, which is joy.
Being a fine and Celtic artist, I too am fascinated with the Mandala form. Therefore, it is natural for me to experiment with Celtic design to create my own interpretations of this ancient art.
