Tapestry - Textile - Batik
Original design is a traditional batik. Each color has been vat-dyed.Initially the design is drawn onto the fabric, in this case, fine cotton. Hot wax was applied everywhere I wanted to be white, so the egret was waxed as were all the dots in the water. The piece was then emersed in a vat of blue and very quickly taken out and rinsed to get a VERY pale blue/gray. the piece was dried and the rocks were waxed next. The piece was then emersed in yellow. There are several shades of yellow and each was dyed separately, leaving it in the vat of yellow a little longer. My yellow is my own creation and is more of an ochre the longer the piece is left in the dye. The remaining colors were dyed and dried and waxed and so on. The final step is to iron out all the wax.
