Description
In the year 1854 Henry Mason an his two brothers passed through the country now known as Mason Valley along the Walker River. They were driving cattle to California. The cattle stampeded and in rounding them up the brothers got to see much of the rich grazing land. In 1859 Henry Mason returned and established Masons Ranch. William H. Dickson next moved into the valley, and then Tom Wheeler and his brother, (land later sold to D. Wilson). The next settlers were Angus McLeod, Charles Sneider and a man by the name of Clement who came in 1862. Angus McLeod was only 20 years of age when he came west from a farm in Arkansas. He and Bill McCune and a thousand head of cattle. The year was 1857. Half of the herd was lost before they came to the Sierras. They crossed the mountains in winter. Angus returned to Carson Valley and in September of 1859 he took a job, as clerk for Moses Job, eight miles south of Genoa. In the spring of 1860 Angus bought a couple of teams and became a freighter for the mines of Nevada. As his business increased he made his headquarters in Aurora. In the fall of 1862 he established his ranch in Mason Valley, moving there in 1864 where he sold potatoes, grain and hay to mining towns. In 1880 Angus took charge of the three-storied Exchange Hotel at Aurora. (see painting of Aurora) which property he owned. John S. Craig was another, who lived as a saddler in Aurora for 8 years, went to Pine Grove in 1869 and came into Mason Valley in 1875 where he was a lawyer, merchant, hotel keeper and charge of the Post and Express Office. These were the kind of people that settled , lived in Mason Valley and sold their produce to nearby mining camps. The Post Office opened in 1871. The town was a stage stop from Virginia City to both Aurora and Bodie via Dayton and El Dorado Canyon. Mason is situated 2 miles south of Yerington, well marked by road signs.
