U.S.PD: Reproduction of c.1938 vintage photo of Max Schmeling: b. 1905. d. 2005. German boxer and heavyweight champion of the world between 1930 and 1932. His two fights with American boxing legend Joe louis were worldwide social events because of their nationalistic associations. During the Nazi reign in Germany he personally saved the lives of two Jewish children by hiding them in his apartment. After the war he became friends with his former rival Joe Louis and assisted him financially during his hard times. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992, and died in 2005 at the age of 99.
