The title of the painting is from the Bible, from the book of Daniel. These words were written on the wall of the royal palace in Babylon.
The interpretation of the words: MENE, God has numbered [the days of] your kingdom and has finished it.
TEKEL, you have been weighed in the balances and have been found deficient.
UPHARSIN, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.
