Description
Mesa Verde contains more than 4,800 known archeological sites. This includes cliff dwellings that the Ancestral Puebloans constructed in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls and lived in from A.D. 550 through A.D. 1300. The park also includes 8,500 acres of designated wilderness that supports a great diversity of wildlife. The park is located 2,000 ft above Montezuma valley with flat top and canyons on both sides. In 1888 two cowboys tracking stray cattle came across the dwellings.
