Description
A photograph taken at Mill Creek Marsh, NJ Meadowlands at lowering tide with cloudy skies, reflections and ancient cedar tree stumps showing in the water. Mill Creek Marsh is a 207 acre wetlands area that was acquired by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commmission in 1996, when a few years later the Commission began work to establish tidal flows, upgrade impoundments and plant native plantings among other activites to restore, enhance the wetland environment. Today, there is a network of trails through the wetlands. At low tide one can see thousands of stumps of the Atlantic White Cedar trees that once created dense forest in the New Jersey Meadowlands. The trees were felled for lumber and rumor has it to prevent pirates from hiding among the trees. The pirates would raid the ships carrying goods up and down the Hackensack River and other local waterways. The stumps are favorite perches for gulls, herons, ducks, and other waterbirds and shorebirds during their seasonal visits to the area.
