Description
Established in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus, Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo served as the model mission in Texas. Mission San Jose's grand scale, exquisite architecture, and emphasis upon community drew heavy praise from visitors. The "Queen of the Missions," San Jose continues its spiritual mission to the residents of San Antonio.
The intricate stone carved entrance highlights the family lineage of the Virgin May and Jesus. The lower portion of the doorway features Mary's parents, St. Joachim (l) and St. Anne (r) holding the infant Mary. A vine motif leads to a depiction of the Virgin of Guadalupe is center above the door. The upper portion of the carving features St. Joseph (San Jose) holding the infant Jesus flanked by St. Dominic (l) and St. Francis of Assisi (r). The cross atop the facade represents Jesus.
In 1978 the United States National Park Service and the San Antonio Archdiocese entered into a cooperative agreement creating the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
The San Antonio Missions (The Alamo & San Antonio Missions National Historical Park) is an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
