I love this photograph, Joan! You are very prolific and an outstanding Fine Art Photographer. We are all blessed to be in a position to observed your wonderful work. This piece is very special. I like the title: Mixed heritage. It denotes a truth that many are unaware of or reject. I enjoyed the entrance on the light of the sun in this museum, which was a former synagogue. The light, combined with the Sepia tones and shadows highlight beautiful details in the flouring and the columns holding the ceiling. You mentioned that is was erected in 1180, thus, clearly there were Jews in Spain at that time, Sephardic Jews to be specific. In fact, this population was flourishing in Spain, so much that Spain initiated the Great Inquisition in 1942 to expel them or force them into Christianity. So, when Christopher Columbus started His travels and Discovered the Americas. This ones! Today, most of the peoples in the Americas share some degree of heritage with them. F/v/t/G+

Description

Beautiful afternoon winter light pours into the nearly deserted Santa Maria la Blanca in Toledo Spain. It is now a museum and was a former synagogue. Erected in 1180, it is disputably considered the oldest synagogue building in Europe still standing. It is now owned and preserved by the Catholic Church. Its stylistic and cultural classification is unique as it was constructed under the Christian Kingdom of Castile by Islamic architects for Jewish use. It is considered a symbol of the cooperation that existed among the three cultures that populated the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. It became a church in 1405 or 1411, but no major reforms were done for the change. It took then the name of Santa Maria la Blanca (Saint Mary, the White), and today it is known by this name.
