The waves of the tide vary from tumultuous, unpredictable power to quiet stillness. The Moderno Collection of
wood pens beautifully balances the curves and swirls of the wildly figured Pomelle Bubinga wood with the clean lines of
the platinum metal. The Moderno wooden pens have a unique and mesmerizing aesthetic. The unexpected patterns are
a fascinating contrast to such regal writing instruments.
Bubinga (Guibourtia demeusei) is the equatorial African giant, growing in swamps and along steamy jungle waterways of Cameroon, Zaire and Gaboon to a towering height of 150 ft. Trees yield defect-free logs that are up to 70 ft long and 6 ft in diameter, weighing 10 tons! Consequently, loggers must often wait until seasonal rains flood the area so the wood can be floated to ports.
Bubinga has delicate veins of dark red on a rose colored background. This is in stark contrast to its dull gray sapwood. In the 1700's the French, mistaking it for a rosewood, named it bois de roe d'Afrique (African Rosewood).
The wood used for these pens was rotary cut, in which the growth rings were peeled away from the tree. Bubinga cut in this manner is called Pomelle Bubinga and has a distinct swirling figure. Although Pomelle Bubinga is known as kevazingo in its homeland, designers call it waterfall Bubinga as the ripples resemble a puddle during a light rain.
