Description:
The Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) is a seabird in the auk family. Puffins feed primarily by diving for fish, but also eat other sea creatures, such as squid and crustaceans. Machias Seal Island is one of their favored breeding grounds. In early August, the young fledglings are just trying their wings for the first time, some reluctant while others determined, their proud parents urging them on. By the thousands, Puffins and their good friends the Razorbills cover the entire small island. The Puffins nest amongst rocks and scree where their young were born. They fly over, walk around and float nearby the island, while fishing, socializing, and generally conversing; a cacophony of voices.
