Relief - Woodcut Print
Digital version of an original woodcut, image specifications:
Ink: Mixes of red, black, purple, umber and pure red, maroon and gold
Paper: Banana Bark Ivory, hand-made
Process: This is a "puzzle" piece, in which the block was sawn in 4 pieces prior to printing. Each piece is inked separately, then assembled at the press. All colors can then be printed in one pass. This particular piece of wood is bright to light orange and very hard with pronounced grain, which added to the texture of the print. I am finding very exciting to work with new wood species this year, as each has its own quirks and hidden secrets.
Image: You could say this image was there before I found it, but probably another artist would have "found" something else. In any case, I wanted to pay tribute to one of the most exciting moments in the desert: that first bath of warm light coming from the distance. I have in the past spent many a summer night with my sleeping bag plopped down on the banks of a sandy wash, an experience I highly recommend to anyone seeking tranquility. To be awaken by the first light and then watch the desert come to life, minute by minute, is something that words are inadequate to convey.
