Description
As long as one can remember the mountains of Lebanon were the base of productive agriculture. On its slopes and valleys grow most of the fruit that grace tables far and wide. Apples, peaches, apricots and almonds are often grown in terraced orchards. For hundreds of years farmers have cleared the fields of the rocks that appeared after winter snow had melted. The stones were then built into walls which help to retain moisture and stabilize the soil. Today, regretfully, many terrace orchards have been abandoned. They are regarded as too labor-intensive for this generation of farmers.
