Description:

Mount Bromo Jawa Timor. I painted these two ACTIVE volcanoes during the morning of August 25 2008. The earlier clear sky became overcast as the day progressed and rising winds added to the chill high altitude air. From Malang about a hundred miles to the west of here, my trip took the greater portion of the previous day in a minibus that threatening to roll back down the mountain whenever it stopped. Two mangoes and a liter of water keeping most of the discomfort at bay. During this work, very fine particles of volcanic ash which behaved like powder, whenever a gust of wind lifted it off the caldera floor, covered everything in a fine layer of grey soot. I first noticed it accumulating along the edges of my canvas then becoming more noticeable when the wind drove volcanic plumes in my direction.
The closest crater is that of Mt Bromo itself which emits deadly Sulphur dioxide gases almost continuously. The 3,700 meter high crater of Mount Semeru which is some distance away, releases a cloud of smoke and ash every fifteen minutes and has been doing so for many years like clockwork. The large sand caldera around the crater on the right was caused a few centuries ago when Mount Batok last erupted. Seeing the earth at its most volatile like this, creates a sense of awe and renewed respect.
It is estimated that almost 500 million people worldwide live in close proximity to volcanoes like these. They are at risk of unexpected eruptions, which will likely be preceded by an earthquake.
