Mute Swan Staring
Photograph - Photography
A Mute Swan (cygnus olor) stops gliding on a California lake and stares into the camera after noticing this photographer......Close up, this swan shows that, in addition to its renowned beauty and graceful movements, it is a strong bird with a fierce demeanor. I have seen Mute Swans rise up on their legs to dry off their mighty wings or to show anger at nearby lake birds. People are asked not to feed wild birds, but many do, and lake birds then compete for the freebies. ....Although the swan in this image has pure white wings, its furry neck has taken on a golden hue, the result of iron levels in the lake's water from the lake-bed dirt. That's understandable since swans dive to the bottom head-first, backside up, to feed on a lake's vegetation.......Only Mute Swans have orange beaks. In parts of the U.S. they are considered nuisance birds since they are not a native species.
