Description
Late 16th-century engraving by Theodor de Bry, after a watercolor by Jacques le Moyne, depicting "the funeral ceremony in honor of the kings and priests," of the Timucua tribe of Florida. The chief's grave is surrounded by arrows and topped with his drinking cup (the shell). In the background (upper left) his house and possessions are burned. Although de Bry never set foot in the New World himself, his copies of watercolors by the French artist le Moyne are some of the earliest, if not necessarily the most accurate, surviving records of the Native Americans of the period.
