This institution was established in 1880 to train engineering officers for the British Royal Navy. The late-Victorian period saw great changes in shipping during the transition from sail to steam. Britain maintained its position as a great maritime and imperial power by training its crews and engineers in the latest technologies. The engineering college moved from this location in 1938.
