Description
Naval engineering school. Pupils training at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Keyham, Devonport, Devon, UK. This institution was established in 1880 to train engineering officers for the British Royal Navy. The late-Victorian period saw great changes in shipping during the transition from sail to steam. Britain maintained its position as a great maritime and imperial power by training its crews and engineers in the latest technologies. The engineering college moved from this location in 1938. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
