Drawing - Pen And Ink
This is one of 195 illustrations contained in the first book of the adventure/fantasy series titled "The Vine Of Hours". I am the author/illustrator. Sir Bols, the Black Knight and his small squad of a dozen knights have been deployed to investigate stories of a dragon and other strange creatures suddenly appearing throughout the country attacking people, and even villages. Their assignment has been changed in the field through a carrier pidgeon message from the castle to search for the Prince, who has gone missing from the castle. Unknown to anyone but his closest friends who assisted him in his clandestine escape, the prince has purposely disregarded his father's command for everyone, including him, to stay in Bumpo Castle until the nature and extent of the dragon's presence can be determined. The Black Knight and his squad happen upon the Beast in the deep forest while searching for the Prince and surround him. This very morning they have already had an unfortunate encounter with strange beings that have taken the lives of two of their company. These knights are not in a forgiving or tolerant state of mind, especially regarding anyone that is not normal looking. They are on a seek and destroy mission for any abnormal or monstrous being. The Beast fits this description perfectly as far as they are concerned. The Prince and Asil happen upon this situation and the Prince feels compelled to intervene. He is indebted to the lionman from an earlier encounter with a hostile ogre who attacked him. The Beast intervened and saved the boy, and now he feels obligated to repay his debt to this strange creature. Aaron sneaks up to the scene, crawling through the leaves on the forest floor unheard by the knights, and after surveying the situation, takes careful aim with his crossbow. He is terrified to accidently harm one of his father's knights, all of whom he knows personally, but feels he must help this strange being who helped him, without revealing himself to the knights. He does not want to go back to the castle. His adventure is just beginning, and these knights will insist. They cannot force him to do anything, he is after all, their Prince, but they can and must report all to his father, and that would be bad enough. A King is a King, after all, father or not. Kings take being disobeyed very seriously, by anyone, and that includes family. Prince Aaron forces that out of his mind, and focuses. He aims carefully..remembering all he was taught as to how to do this properly, point after point, since he was a little child...aims...and pulls the trigger of his crossbow.
