Neel and Miller. US geneticists James 'Jim' Van Gundia Neel (left, 1915-2000) and Albert 'Al' Miller (right, 1911-1996). Both are from the Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW). Neel specialised in genetic epidemiology, working in South America. For his work, he was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1974. Miller, an entomologist, obtained his doctorate from Cornell University in 1938, and worked at the CIW in the 1940s. This photograph is from the papers of Croatian-US geneticist Milislav Demerec who was the director of the CIW Department of Genetics (later Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), New York, USA, from 1941 to 1960. Photographed in 1940.
