Description
On my last day in Granada, I finally made it over to see the Convento San Francisco, one of the oldest buildings in Granada from what I was told. Unfortunately by the time I made it by the doors were shut tight so I missed the opportunity to see the interior, but there was something about that Neoclassical Facade that spoke to me of pictures I've see of the American Southwest. It reminded me of those often plain buildings (when seen from the rear) with elaborate fronts. I'm honestly not sure what laid beyond, though!
The old church is supposed to be one of the oldest in the Spanish colonial city, but like most of the buildings in Granada, it's been damaged extensively either by nature or man multiple times over.
The beautiful and elaborate facade (Beaux Arts I think?) was added during the last major reconstruction in the late 19th century. Perhaps that explains my connection with this building and the photos of old missions I've seen from the southwest?
Whatever the case, don't you love the grand lines?
