New England Storm
Painting - Oil On Canvas
A rocky coastal sunrise/sunset with dramatic clouds and lighthouse and surf pounding on the rocks. The foreground of this painting is a granite out cropping of boulders going down into the sea. Waves are crashing up and over the partly submerged rocks just off shore. The water in the near foreground has a deep blue while the ocean out towards the horizon becomes more blue purple. The lighthouse is on the fare cliff and has some pine trees near it. Behind the lighthouse are thunder clouds that are beginning to part and give way to the sunrise. The background is the open sea with bright yellow clouds and a blue sky. A granite shore line with rocky cliffs and a lighthouse sitting on a bluff overlooking an open sea are to me a picture asking to be painted. This scene is made up from my imagination but was inspired by the many trips I have made to the Maine coast and especially Acadia National Park. When I paint something like this I can hear the buoy bells, smell the ocean and see forever.
