The image you see here is the result of a interesting evening at home, coupled with a trip to a local fair, and an adventure in Mexico.
It was not me in Mexico, but the character in the book I was reading, The Crossing by Cormac Mccarthy. In it there is a young man journeying on horseback through the mountains of Mexico. One night I was reading the book on the couch with my wife Aleesha across the room looking through some photographs on her computer. In the story, the young man's horse had been seriously wounded, and he was at work caring for the animal. The horse had been his companion and was all the boy had left of his former life.
Aleesha called to me saying: "Hey, I have a picture for you to paint."
I put my book aside and walked over to the computer to see this gorgeous picture of a horse looking back at me. The photo had been taken a few months before at a local county fair. I had been at the fair but had never seen the photo. Likewise, Aleesha did not know the specifics of what I had been reading. This just happened. Of course, I had to paint it right away. The resulting work is what you see here. His name is Nino after the horse in the novel.
Also, the brush I used to start this painting contained horse hair, and there are a few strands left intentionally in the paint.
The original is 20 x 24 acrylic on canvas and is available for sale.
