Description
NJ Great Falls in Autumn by Regina Geoghan. A photograph of the Passaic River Great Falls, located in Paterson NJ, surrounded by fall foliage and with a rainbow glowing in the mist of the Great Falls. This is by far my most popular image in terms of number of views with close to 13,000 visitors clicking on it. One of our most recently designated National Parks in the USA, the Great Falls of Paterson, located on the Passaic River, holds a fascinating place in the history of America. In 1791, as the result of a vision of Alexander Hamilton of what could be achieved using the power of the Falls, Paterson N.J. became America's first planned industrial city. At first, silk mills were established and thrived and soon mills and factories to produce cotton, silk, automobiles, guns, paper and more were established. The vision of Hamilton led to the formation of the Society for Establishing Useful Manufacturers (S.U.M) in 1792. The Great Falls of Paterson became a National Historic Landmark District in 1976. The Great Falls raceway and power systems were designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1977. In 2009, the area was made a National Historic Park when President Obama signed the Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park Act as part of the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act.
