Sculpture - Cottonwood Bark Wood Carving Acrylic Wash
This is one of the first cottonwood bark carvings I did. A friend of mine had been salvaging chunks of cottonwood bark from old, fallen trees and carving a variety of items from the soft but dense wood (cottonwood trees do not shed their bark, but raither, it grows in layers just like the inner tree which creates a beautiful carving material).
I found out about whimsical carvings of gnome homes, and gave it a try. Most folks just stain or seal their carvings, but being a painter, I couldn't stop without adding some color! I work in washes of acrylics after sealing the carving, so that the wood grain still shows through. I chose to work in muted rustic colors that reminisent of an old Swiss or German Alpine home.
Each carving also features a narrow stairway path carved into the surface for the gnomes to make their way home. Most feature a chimney as the winters here are cold and you wouldn't want to freeze your gnomes!
This particular birch tree in our yard has an oval opening in the bark - the perfect place for any gnome to build his home!
Thanks for looking - if you'd like to buy a gnome home from me, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I've got a stack of cottonwood bark waiting to be carved, and I'll post any future available pieces. However, like most of my carvings, they tend to sell quickly so often all I can post are the photos of sold items. I can always repeat a style of carving, but due to the bark shape, each carving will always been unique in it's finished product.
