She was so sweet, always.
With such clear and bright energy.
When she showed me her friends
wide pouch belt from Burma,
I knew I was hooked.
It was a work of art. Period.
I just had to try my hand at one.
Kelly chose her own carpet and textiles.
She did not want all the coins and bells,
Hers would be simpler and more of the earth.
I drew a sketch of the original.
We measured her hips, high and low.
Then the work began.
There are serious engineering logistics
To all bags. But one to be worn round the hips?
Without pulling and flopping and twisting?
Hers has one large pouch made from a soft but dense
Persian carpet remnant, and two small cell phone sized pockets.
Behind the large one, is an open space between it and the belt.
There is a loop for her water bottle, and a hidden pocket or two,
Tucked away out of sight.
Because she is young and svelte and likely to stay that way,
Her belt closes with large metalic slide-hooks.
But it could just as easily have had buttons with adjustable loops.
The embroidery is all taken from vintage quilts,
Hand made, harvested, reinforced, and attached to their new home.
This one has vintage coins and carved Buddhas
and an Aztec sun with a mirrored third eye for whimsey.
But there are as many designs
as there are women seeking them.
As simple or as ornate as you desire.
Matchy-matchy, or eclectic.
Carpet or denim or canvas or silk,
Or a combination, like this one!
The one thing they cannot be is large.
Sorry, but we are not pack mules after all.
We are runners and jumpers and Nomadic spirits!
I did not even count the hours it took me to make this.
Because tht was not what it was about.
It was about FREEDOM.
Freedom from straps and handles.
The freedom to stride and skip and
Use both hands for important things.
Like climbing a tree,
Or rescuing a puppy from the highway,
Or holding the face of someone you love...
CUSTOM ORDERS ONLY. THIS ONE IS KELLYS!
