Northeast Close-up Of New River Gorge Bridge
Photograph - Digital Photograph
When completed in 1977, at a height of 876 ft. the New River Gorge Bridge was the highest single arch span in the world. Although no longer the highest, it remains world famous annually the third Saturday in October each year as it is closed to traffic to allow West Virginia to host one of the world's largest celebrations. Mountaineers observe Bridge Day with individuals from many other states and countries who come to B.A.S.E. jump and rappell from its lofty height.
