Description:
Soon after arriving in Australia as a new migrant in 1978, I used to visit the north east of Tasmania frequently, even thinking of purchasing land there. This was painted during one of many subsequent visits. Painted near Pioneer, a storm threatens, bringing with it a fair lashing of rain and gusts of wind. Severe deforestation by earlier logging has left a scarred landscape but new settlers during the last twenty years have sought to rehabilitate and heal the environment. Baby boomers bought up vast tracts of land during the seventies for this purpose right across the vastness of Australia. Today these patches of turf are worth their weight in gold.
During this painting, a rainbow appeared and I was obliged, as luck would have it, to included it in the sky. The oppressive humidity just before the break of thunder was aptly captured here, as I had one eye on an escape route in the event of a downpour. Thirty percent of my work worldwide is painted in the rain, causing me to wonder whether scuba gear would come in handy one day.
