Oasis Bordello Basement - Wallace Idaho
In the basement of the Oasis Bordello in Wallace, Idaho are remnants of the prostitution business of the past. The town was a hard-scrabble mining town in the silver valley mining region of north Idaho. For decades up until the 1980's, the town hosted a half dozen bordellos who catered to the overabundance of young miners and loggers working in the rural mountainous area.
The sign in the photo hung outside one of the most infamous ones. Patrons would ascend a flight of stairs up to a locked door with a doorbell and peep hole. Prostitution was illegal, but Wallace looked the other way and it was said that the Madams were good citizens who contributed to high school uniforms and police and fire equipment.
