Icicles and winter go hand in hand in the midwest United States. The snow falls, the roofs, trees and fences become covered and when the glow of the morning sun warms the air the icicles are born. When snow and ice are melted and begin to run downward as a result of temperatures below freezing, the runoff will freeze once again. As the temperatures rise and fall, the icicle then begins to melt in various sections, due to thickness, and exposure to the elements. It is this process that creates the wonderful patterns and shapes.
