Do you remember the days when you went with your mother to the old fabric store where she would spend what seemed like hours looking at neat rows of bolt behind the counter to find 'just the right' fabrics for her sewing project; when the fabric was measured and nicked with the meter, the clerk wiggling the fabric back and forth to get the meter to the exact mark, then press the lever to get a little slit, and then your mother's fabric portion was ripped from the roll or bolt while you and your sibling spent your time sitting on bolts or playing hide and seek in the shop?
These were the times long before fabric stores were called "quilt shops" - mostly consisted of plain broad cloth in every colour, some prints, gingham in several colours, flannelette, tea towelling and denim. Sometimes I wish I had a time machine to travel back to those days ...if for nothing else, just the experience of purchasing fabric in such a store ...
The 'Good Old Days' were not always good, but the thought of Old Fabric Shops brings back some good memories.
