Description
"Old Mill Aqueduct" is a watercolor of the view from my studio window - the Historic Daniel Mill in Vernon Rockville Connecticut .
My "Mill on the Hill at Falls" is not mine, yet, but I work here and love it specially. Part of sale proceeds goes to the restoration fund, so it is a bit higher priced than the others here.
These mills are our birthplace as a nation. Because the original mills on this falls could make the pilgrims fabrics and grind the wheat and make the paper and other goods, we could be FREE, we could be AMERICA - we could provide for our own needs, and so we did. A century later the more modern versions of the textile mills here wove the uniforms for the North and the South in the Civil War, and then things changed: cheap imports and the market crash of 1929 put them out of business, and this, formerly one of the richest towns on earth, knew bitter poor days.
Rescued by modern needs and ways, the mills are centers of much industry again, repurposed as small manufacturing, small business, restaurant and condo properties, and more beautiful than ever.
This one is actually three mills: Daniel , where I am , at left; Amerbelle and Rock Mills at center and right. Daniel has recently been made the core site for a National Park Picnic area for the waterfall view. Amerbelle and Rock Mills recently won new owners who will restore and repurpose them, once again crowning the town in beauty and prosperity.
