OLD STONE GATE is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
This lovely arched gate, in an ancient stone wall, was photographed on the Isle of Wight, which is across the Solent from Southampton, England.
The island is a popular vacation destination for the British. My London-born husband remembers going to summer camps there as a boy.
The island has lots of thatched cottages, and quaint villages. There are beautiful coastal walks with breathtaking scenery, as well as lovely inland rural areas.
The town of Cowes is a yachting center. We have enjoyed staying at the lovely bed and breakfast of some friends who have a wonderful old home overlooking the Solent. We have seen sailboats on the Solent, and have also seen large cruise ships, like the QE2 and the Queen Mary, pass very close to us as they left Southampton.
I am not a sailor, but I had the opportunity to be at the helm of a 60 foot sloop on the Solent for over an hour (closely supervised by our friend who is a master mariner). It was one of the most simultaneously terrifying and exhilirating experiences of my life!!
If you haven't had the opportunity to visit the Isle of Wight, I can highly recommend it!!
