On Route 66

( Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved ) About 75 miles east of Amarillo, in the Texas Panhandle small town of McLean, you will find that history and nostalgia have not been forgotten. In 1927, the most famous road of them all was built through here on it's way across America to Southern California. Motels, attractions and gas stations sprang up to serve the needs of many tourists looking for fun and adventure on their travels. This early cottage style service station was the first Phillips 66 built in Texas, in 1929. Although McLean is a small town where time stands still, they are very proud to be the headquarters for the Texas Historic Route 66 Association. Even some people there can still remember that not so long ago, many travelers got their cars fixed, and "Got Their Kicks" ... On Route 66.
