Description
We customarily think of the Venice Carnival when we think of Venetian masks; however, during the 17th century, masks were commonly being worn during other special occasions as well: society balls, opera, theatre, state ceremonies and other special events.
The Venice Carnival was (& still is) a time of festivity during the ten days before Lent. During this time, it was impossible to tell who was an aristocrat, and who was not: the class structure had a holiday.
Venetian mask makers during the Middle Ages organized themselves into guilds, with the same regulations as painters. While early masks were very simple - primarily white or black - over time they became more and more elaborate.
This is one elaborate Venetian mask - the original photograph of a red, black and cream coloured mask has been processed and textured into hues of blue.
