From its lofty hilltop position, the small village of Castelo Rodrigo, Portugal looks down over the plateau stretching eastwards to Spain and northwards to the deep valley of the River Douro. In the olden days, the castle in the center of the city stood on the route taken by the pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela. Legend has it that none other than St. Francis of Assisi spent the night here on his pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James. This little shop is located in the town. I'm not sure if there was an entrance that charged a fee, but we chose the free entrance.
