Description
Ordnance Survey (OS) benchmark. OS benchmarks were installed by the Ordnance Survey department throughout the UK to record the height above mean sea level as determined by the Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN). This flush bracket is known as a non-pillar flush bracket and dates from the 2nd Geodetic Survey of the 1920's. Its height above sea level is 95.298 metres. A special bracket is clipped on to provide a horizontal measuring ledge. This system has largely been supereded by GPS (global positioning system) methods. Photographed in England, UK.
