About The Poster: This poster was created for the 1949 Swiss Trade Fair in Basel, Switzerland. This was an important fair in the history of industry and design for Switzerland. 1949 marks the beginning of a school of thought in modern Swiss design that was to take over the world as the International Style over the next twenty years. Max Bill, considered to be a pionneer of this movement, was comissioned to organise a special exhibition during the 1949 fair which assembled high-quality Swiss products and and his own work in order to show the principles that drove contemporary Swiss design : Pure functional form organized systematically. The poster shows a work by Swiss painter Hans Falk. Falk (1918-2002) was one of the most important modern Swiss painters. Born in Zurich, he studied art in his native town as well as in Lucerne. He began working as a poster designer after graduating, and won several awards for his graphic work. Later on he travelled extensively, living and working in England, the United-States, Ireland and Italy. Falk passed in 2002 "a fruitful career that produced a large body of paintings, posters and sought-after graphic designs, and made him one of the most important contemporary Swiss artists."
