Description
GOLD MINES OF SOUTH AFRICA Bantu mineworkers are attracted from many parts of Southern Africa to work in the South African gold mines. Many travel long distances on foot to the numerous depots maintained in remote areas to make it easy for them to go to the mines of their choice. At these depots they volunteer for spells of duty of between six and 18 months. They then travel to the mines by road, air and rail. (The industry maintains its own airline to fly the workers south). Some fifty languages and dialects are used by those tribesmen of Africa who like to come to the mines. It is, therefore, necessary for the mines to use a "lingua franca" known as Fanakalo (meaning, "Like this"). It is a simple language easily learnt in a week or ten days. Here an instructor at a mine training school begins the first lesson with a group of new men. They are learning the names of some tools, protective clothing and pieces of equipment which they will use in the mines.
