Description
Ossewa 1830 - 1840 (Oxwagon in South Africa)
The Great Trek (Afrikaans: Die Groot Trek) was an eastward and north-eastward migration away from British control in the Cape Colony during the 1830s and 1840s by Boers (Dutch/Afrikaans for "farmers"). The migrants were descended from settlers from western mainland Europe, most notably from the Netherlands, northwest Germany and French Huguenots.
This educational illustration executed as an old drawing by South African artist Christo R. Wolmarans, shows the design of a typical ox wagon (Ossewa) from the period naming the typical elements in Dutch and Afrikaans of it's mechanical anatomy.
A great conversation piece for history enthusiasts and scholars.
