Description
One of the best fighter planes of World War two, the North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, also is one of the most photogenic. The photos in color in this collage I took at the Reading Air Show, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Museum (in Pennsylvania). The black and white photos are public domain images from World War Two. On the upper left is Col. Don Blakeslee, commander of the 4th Fighter Group and considered one of the finest air combat commanders of the war. In the center is ace Don Gentile of the 4th Fighter Group, and I recommend highly Googling his name so you can learn more about him and the sad fate of "Shangri-La", the P-51 shown with him. On the lower right is Clay Kinnard, also an ace and commander of the 355th Fighter Group when the war ended. It was not unknown for Blakeslee to give an early welcome to new, young pilots headed to his base by train with a buzz of the train in his P-51, inverted.
