Description
I stood outside of Palau Guell, debating whether to pay the fee to go in. Palau Guell is one of Gaudi's early works, completed in 1890. The facade is a bit dark and only gives hints as to what is within. In the end I figured I was in Barcelona, I must see Gaudi! And I was happy I did. This is from the shapes on the rooftop. Here you see the first application of the trencadis technique: lining of surfaces with irregular mosaic fragments. The Palau Guell is a mansion designed by the architect Antoni Gaudi for the industrial tycoon Eusebi Guell. It is situated in the Carrer Nou de la Rambla, in the El Raval neighbourhood of the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudi". While Palau Guell was panned by some tour books in favor of some of Gaudi's other works around town, to me this was interesting from the point of view of the development of Gaudi's style....from here to the Sagrada Familia!
