Description
Frond of a Bismarckia Palm (Bismarckia nobilis), endemic to Madagascar, photographed at a botanical garden. Image processed to bring out the very subtle colors in the raw capture.
I was attracted to this composition by the pattern of leaves fanning out, the very subtle colors, the thread-like stuff weaving through the leaves on the right side, and the natural grungy textures of the leaves. A large print of this image would be a great wall art for your home, office and business.
Bismarckia is a genus of a flowering plant in the palm family endemic to western and northern Madagascar where it grows in open grassland. It grows from solitary trunks that show ringed indentations from old leaf bases. Trunks are 30 to 45 cm in diameter, slightly bulging at the base, and free of leaf bases in all but its youngest parts. In its natural habitat it can reach above 25 meters in height but usually get no taller than 12 m in cultivation. The leaves are enormous in maturity, over 3 m wide, and are divided to a third its length into 20 or more stiff, once-folded segments, themselves split on the ends. Bismarck palms are grown throughout the tropics, subtropics and favor temperate microclimates. They are planted quite widely in many parts of the world such as the Orlando and Tampa Bay areas in Florida, and in botanical gardens (as in this photo).
