Description
An example of a monster being depicted for a political purpose is the Papal Ass, a supposedly real beast that had been found floating in the river Tiber. Images of the Papal Ass were used by both sides in the debate about the Reformation. Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 - October 16, 1553), was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker in woodcut and engraving. He also produced a number of violent anti-Catholic propaganda prints, in a cruder style, directed against the Papacy and the Catholic clergy. A monster is any creature, usually found in legends or horror fiction, that is often hideous and may produce fear or physical harm by its appearance and/or its actions. The word usually connotes something wrong or evil. A monster is generally morally objectionable, physically or psychologically hideous, and/or a freak of nature.
