Description
Parasitic protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of several Crithidia fasciculata protozoa. These are flagellated protozoa. The flagella are the thin, whip-like structures, and are used by the protozoa for movement. These protozoa are pathogenic, causing human and animal diseases. They are transmitted by arthropods like mosquitoes and flies, which inject the protozoa into the bloodstream where they develop through their life cycle. This species of protozoa is a trypanosome. Other species of trypanosomes cause disease like Chagas disease and sleeping sickness. Magnification x1000 when printed 10cm high.
