Parisian Gargoyle Admires The Skyline
Photograph - Photo
While I took a lot of photos from my time on the top of Notre Dame de Paris, it was the gargoyles I was most taken with, and it's telling that those photos, those I most enjoyed, are the ones of which I'm most proud. The Parisian skyline was beautiful on its own, no doubt about that. But including those beautiful and detailed Gargoyles in my photos of the Paris skyline filled them with character.
The Gargoyles were original features of the medieval cathedral, but I couldn't tell you if any of the ones I photographed were actually original. I read that most of them were pulled down in the centuries after as tastes changed and the weather took its toll. But in the mid 19th century, the entire cathedral was renovated back to its French Gothic roots, including the Gargoyles.
Although this guy may or may not be one of the original gargoyles of Notre Dame, they made great effort to keep them sympathetic with what the originals would have been, which makes them feel quite special. Imagine all the work that went into these statues on the top of the cathedral, in a place most people never see.
Note: Notre Dame de Paris, including this wonderful Gargoyle overlooking the city, is part of a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
