Paul Broca, French Anatomist
Photograph - Photograph
Paul Broca (1824-1880), French anatomist. This bronze statue was inaugurated on 26 July 1887, on the Boulevard Saint Germain, Paris, France. The sculptor, Paul-Francois Choppin (1856-1937), has shown Broca taking measurements of a human skull. This refers to Broca's work in anthropology, where his methods allowed comparison of prehistoric and modern humans, supporting Darwin's theories of evolution. This statue was one of several taken down during World War II to recycle the metals, and has not been replaced. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
