A single drop of water suspended on a peacock feather swirls with colour.
Peacock feathers hold such fascination for me. The colours are rich, dynamic and iridescent. I love the way a different light or a different perspective will vastly change the colours you are looking at.
I also like the seemingly dual process of this evolutionary wonder - sexual attraction and defence. For those of you fortunate enough to watch a peacock strut, there can be no mistaking that purposeful walk and fan fair, these tails are meant to delight and entrance. The suggestion of an eye on each feather serves to give a warning to predators - look out! There are lots of creatures hiding in this fan. Some of them might be top of your food chain. Do you really want to mess with that?
This beautiful bird has a history rich with given meanings.
The peacock, known for its beauty and grace, is a symbol of beauty, prosperity, royalty, love and compassion, and peace. In Buddhism, peacocks symbolize purity and the feathers are used in purification ceremonies.
Ancient peoples erroneously believed the peacock had flesh that didn't decay after death, making the peacock a symbol of immortality. This is why you see early Christian paintings and mosaics depicting peacock imagery. The peacock is also a symbol of renewal as those beautiful feathers are grown anew each year.
