Thanks a lot Heiko and Helga! We see these during our 'winter' here in S Florida. They are Portugese Man-O-War, a very unique and dangerous sea creature. The bubble is not dangerous, but the tentacles you see here in the photo in purple will sting you very badly when touched. The tentacles can be several feet long, up to 20 feet for a large one, and they float in the water and sting their prey. I have been stung once very severely as a child when a long tentacle wrapped around my arm as I swam. It felt like a fire was burning me and the sting lasted many hours. My arm was very painful and the lympth nodes swelled with the poison. The lifeguard applied ammonia but it did not help much at all. I hope never to be stung again but they are all over the beach and in the water of the Atlantic during January, February, and sometimes in to March. Celebrate life, Debra
